Snow, ice cause travel chaos, kill several across Europe

(MENAFN) Severe snowfall and icy conditions across Europe have led to widespread travel disruption and at least six reported deaths in weather-related incidents.

In France, five people lost their lives in two separate regions due to dangerous driving conditions. Three died in the Landes region in the southwest because of black ice, while two others died in separate accidents in the Paris area. One involved a collision between a driver and a heavy goods vehicle in east Paris, and the other occurred when a taxi hit a kerb, slid into the Marne River, and plunged into the water.

In Bosnia, a woman was killed in the capital, Sarajevo, after 16 inches (40 cm) of snow caused a tree to fall on her.

Hundreds of flights have been cancelled across Europe, leaving thousands of passengers stranded at airports including Paris and Amsterdam. Disruption is expected to continue into Wednesday.

French Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot warned that more snow is expected on Tuesday night and Wednesday, urging people to limit travel on the roads and work from home where possible.

France’s national weather service placed 38 districts on orange alert for snow and black ice, with many train services cancelled in affected regions. In Paris, Roissy-Charles de Gaulle airport planned to cancel 40% of flights for several hours on Wednesday morning to allow snow clearance, while Orly airport cancelled a quarter of flights during the same period.

At Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport, over 400 flights were cancelled on Wednesday, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded and forming long queues at airline counters as they sought information about when flights would resume.
